EIGHTEEN

Nikki fought back a yawn as Rory filled her large travel cup with fresh, strong coffee. She’d managed to get a few hours of sleep in the early dawn hours, dozing off on the couch with her notes from the day. Thankfully, Rory had been ready with coffee when her alarm blared at 6 a.m.

“The news is already talking about Matt Kline being a suspect.” Rory leaned against the counter, dressed for work in paint-splattered jeans and a Minnesota Twins T-shirt that had seen better days. Rory owned his own construction company, and his services were in high demand all year long. Nikki liked to tease him that he’d only gone into construction for the casual attire.

She jammed her notebook into her bag. “What are they saying?” If it had already leaked that Matt had stopped by the house on Saturday night, heads were going to roll. Leaks could derail an investigation and destroy a chance at a conviction later.

“Right now, it’s a lot of rehashing the old stuff,” Rory answered. “I’ve seen at least two retired therapists with no knowledge of his case discuss how his trauma could have caused him to snap.” He rolled his eyes. “God, I hate the media sometimes.”

“That’s right, you’d remember the case.” Nikki had been in the same grade as Rory’s older brother, Mark. Since Rory was a few years younger, he’d graduated high school not long before the murders. “Did you know Amy?”

“Only in passing,” Rory said. “I thought about attending the funeral, but it was massive. Pretty much everyone in the area attended, and I didn’t need people whispering behind my back about Mark and your parents.”

“What about the rumor mill at the time?” Nikki asked. “Do you remember hearing anything about Mrs. Kline having an affair?”

“I didn’t pay much attention,” Rory said. “Mark had been in prison for eight years or so by then, and I worked every second I could. Kept me from dwelling too much.”

Nikki believed he didn’t hold a grudge for everything that had happened with Mark, but she still felt a pang of guilt.

Rory crossed the kitchen and wrapped his arms around her. “I don’t blame you,” he reminded her.

“I know.” She craned her neck to look up at him. “What about your parents? Do you think they might remember more?”

“Maybe,” Rory said. “Although I’m not sure what they’d know that wouldn’t be in the records.”

“The rumor mill at the time,” Nikki said. “We’re going to look at the original case.”

He stared down at her in alarm. “You think the same person came back and murdered those girls?”

“I can’t say more, but Alexia had a lot of interest in the Kline murders.”

“Damn,” Rory said. “I’ll ask Mom and Dad if they remember anything. By the way, did you get a chance to talk to Lacey yesterday?”

Nikki shook her head. “Every time I thought of it, I was pulled in another direction. I texted her a few times though. Did you?”

“For a few minutes last night. She’s having fun and getting spoiled.
